Today, 256,912 Farcasters have a Level 0 Spam Label, meaning they are likely to be spammers. We can't check them one by one and see if they are a false positive; there are too many. But you can save your friends from the Spam Label right now.
You can use the Dune query below to find out who YOU follow that has a Level 0 Spam Label. You will need to sign up for a FREE Dune account and then add your FID to run the query.

Scroll to the bottom and you'll see your following and who you follow. You can't do anything about who follows you, but you can investigate who you follow and take action. On the bottom right you'll see : Farcaster - Following with Spam Label - By FID; click the "label" heading to sort the table and go through the Level 0's.
Who are you following with a label? Are they honestly being spammy? Check their account and look at their recents casts. Use my guide to help your decide. Please remember this is guidance, not gospel. The spam algorithm is secret, as it should be, so this is based on behavioral patterns of accounts that get marked as spammy.
The Unwritten Rules of Warpcast: Avoiding Spam Labels (V2)
It's time to stop being polite and start being real. Farcaster is a super cool open protocol, but Warpcast, the main client 95% of us use to engage with it, is a closed sandbox with a lot of unwritten rules and culture that you have to figure out to do well.
If you 1000% believe some of the people you follow that have a "0" label are incorrect and you are willing to stake your reputation on it, please plead your case to the Warpcast team on the cast linked below.

Who you follow is important. Unfollow spammy accounts. Save your friends who are mislabeled. Their Warpcast experience is awful.
Level 0 is not eligible for Warpcast rewards. When they tag people, those who were tagged don't get notified. Their replies are sent to the "Show More Replies" bucket. They are basically invisible on Warpcast. Daily Active Users is too small to lose good casters. The algorithm isn't perfect, so we have to help bring attention to those who get caught in the net.

Farcaster seems to be using DAU as a KPI, but if they don’t continuously analyze the data while filtering out bots, they might misinterpret the actual situation. The most important thing should be the user experience. Lately, the home feed feels off. I wonder if they’re tracking impressions.

(2/11) 1. Don’t ask for follows. People don’t like that. Most casters ignore anyone with F4F or anything like that in their profile. Some of this behavior stems from many moons ago when you needed 200/400 followers to get an “Active Badge” and then a good ratio to get a Power Badge. Many airdrop farmers flooded the network with F4F posts that were nothing but spam in the hopes of being eligible for airdrops. This soured most of the network on F4F. You may be new and tempted to join in on these chains, but it will be detrimental to your experience here. Who you follow matters and by following people you give them power and your own reputation. Choose who you follow wisely.
(3/11) 2. It’s a social network, not social media. Broadcast only doesn’t work well here. People want to chat so make your posts easy to comment on and engage with. Ask @gmfc101 about the difference and why it’s important.
(4/11) 3. The home feed algorithm is shaped by engagement. If you want to see more of something in your feed, interact with it. If you scroll by and don’t interact, the algorithm assumes you don’t like it and will stop showing it to you. It’s why you probably see the same people over and over in your home feed and not others. Teach it what you like. Use the following tab and scroll channels to broaden your content. Smash the like button

The F4F behaviour (and also "I''m giving away X, rules: follow me and tag 2 friends:"), also feels very Web2 to me, where you need a lot of followers to qualify for potential advertising earnings. Farcaster is built different.
I feel like most of the “tag X number of people have turned out to be rugs or scummy. I definitely understand wanting your project to go viral but I can’t think of an example where it’s worked out here.

Nice socks. Don't think that more aggressive spam algorithm will help. In general it's about resources from Farcaster, and those from the spammers. In general this means that spammers will post low quality posts, without much thought. The rest can easily be mimicked. However at this moment (could change) they have relative more interaction with 0-spam-labels, if they take the effort to let an account grow. But, how do we know the difference between low quality casters, and spammers?

After 100,000 casters lost their good spam label, I imagine the spam problem must be much worse than we imagine. Because of the dramatic shifts in labels over the past 2 weeks, it feels almost impossible to track or make sense of. Maybe we just embrace it.

Spam maker Hormel is headquartered right here in Minnesota. I could make a pilgrimage there for all the accounts branded with the ignoble label.
It’s not impossible, but it’s a lot of painstaking forensic work. @fookinnowan is actually doing the dirty work of identifying tipping rings and they are alive and thriving. Check out his feed. @jacek banned some of the worst offenders in season 12 based on Fookin’s findings, but the most recent findings have gone unpunished.

I believe it's a big obstacle to Farcaster organic growth and sustainable development. People don't like to be controlled specifically in this severe way and onchain tags! It's completely in the opposite direction of crypto culture, in my opinion.
Spam Labels have been public for a month and we've seen significant updates to the number of casters with Level 2 Labels (the good one) and the consequences of the Level 0 Label (the worst one) via the Great Follower Purge of February 2025. With a resurgence of bot-like accounts this weekend, the algorithm will only get more aggressive. I've made significant revisions on this article as the team has given us more clarity around the algorithm as well as included resources on how to save your friends from spam jail and a thread on the teams thinking about spam. Please remember this is guidance, not gospel. The algo is secret. Always appreciate any feedback or areas I can clarify.

Thanks especially for point 5. Sometimes, just by participating on a certain topic, I can respond to someone who doesn't follow me yet. Now I will keep in mind to do it only when I see a channel's label. Regarding quotes. My opinion as a user and channel moderator. It is extremely annoying that people quote another publication, without adding value. Honestly, when I see this, I hide that content from the channel. Unfortunately here in WC there are many channels that were created to do this: only quote another publication. That does not favor users at all. Since then this practice is transferred to general use, outside the channel where they learned to do this.
I’ve found that I had to change a lot of habits I learned too! Things move quickly here and that’s hard to convey to people who don’t spend time here daily. There is a definitely a culture here and it’s really hard to understand at times! But with the leaderboard, we can see what the algo likes and values and that’s been extremely valuable!

Pichi. 100% recommendable for what you mention in point 8. The query showed me 74 profiles with tag 0. I analyzed them all, and only kept the 16 that I don't consider to be spam.
A few of mine got upgraded and now most of mine are AI agents that really need their own label.

Okay, I’m not sure why, but two weeks ago I had over 6k followers, and now I’m down to 3.9k. I know that have not been very active, but I’m wondering—were all those lost followers spam or bots? Like, what exactly happened, any new changes that I was not aware of? @farcaster @ted @dwr.eth @pichi

you didn't "lose" them per se, warpcast just isn't showing followers who are labeled as "spammy" in the app anymore. varun and dan casted about this, let me find it!

The best thing you can do to help the spam algo is two fold: 1. Unfollow accounts with a spam label zero. 2. Is a good caster mislabeled as Level Zero??? Save them. Instructions in the comments.

You may see dramatic differences in your following count today. After the great purge last week, many many casters were upgraded from Spam Label 0 (the bad one) to 1 and 2, which means they now count in Warpcast. I noticed my follower count increased and then dropped again over the past few days. Not sure why, but thanks for the updates.
The spam algorithm makes updates daily, but we only see it in the public data set. It normally updates Thursday nights, but was late and didn’t update until Friday morning. So in theory, your number could change daily as labels change.
